Books I DNF'd This Year And Why

Image
As the year is almost at its end, I decided to go back and see just what I’d read throughout the year.  Of the 29 books I’ve started I’ve finished 26. These are the three I didn’t finish and why. Frankenstein - Mary Shelley This was one I was really looking forward to. So many people had said that this was a really good book and from what I managed to read I would have to agree. However as someone who suffered from dyslexia the writing style was so hard to read. Of course with this book being written 1818 it makes sense that this is how it was written,    but I found it so slow going. That doesn’t mean I won’t get round to finishing it, but I think to do so will have to be with an audio book. Demon road - Derek Landy Now this was one that I started to read at the start of a reading slump, so I have every intention of giving it another go. Derek Landy is one of my all time favourite authors so this is one that will get a second chance.  I read about half the book...

The Night Hunt By Alexandra Christo - Book Review

Image
Author: Alexandra Christo Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars  Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Mythology Published Date: 10th October , 2023 What a book. This was the second book by Alexandra Christo that I’ve read, the first being to kill a kingdom and I can safely say I can’t wait to read more from her.  The plot  Atia, a Nefas who feeds on fear has been buried with the guilt of her parents' deaths for years, is cursed by the high gods after she kills a human to save her friend. Silas, a herald  messenger for the gods, is sick of the same thing day in and day out as he waits for his hundred years of service to be up and he can move on to either the After or the Never. After delivering the curse to Atia the pair team up with Tristan a scholar and Cillian a half human half banshee to break the curses that blind them both. Can the group survive long enough to break the curses when the high gifs have put a bounty on their head.  The characters Atia is a moody monster that at ti...

Underrated Book Trilogies

Image
As someone who spends way too much time with my head in a book, I’ve come to love a good trilogy. For me they are the perfect length to give the story time to develop into something that will keep you glued to the pages and it will also allow the author the time to really build fascinating worlds. That being said, here are my three underrated trilogies and yes there will be some spoilers, so you have been warned. The Legendborn Cycle Arthur:  Tracy Deonn Genres: Fantasy, Retellings, King Arthur Mythology Rating: ⅘ stars  This series follows Bree Matthews as she leaves home and goes off to college. There she witnesses something that can't be explained.  A flying demon. In her search for answers she finds the Legendborn, a secret society on campus that hunts these monsters. Oh and their members just happen to be some of King Arthur and the knights of the round tables decendents. Once she joins she realises that the lodges merlin was the person who attempted to make her forg...

Rebel Fires - Book 2 in the Rebel Skies Series

Image
Author: Ann Sei Lin Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars  Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy Published Date: July 5, 2023 The second book in the Rebel Skies series - Rebel Fires continues off where the first ended with Kurara separated from the crew of the Orihime. Stranded in the forest and with a long journey ahead the group must catch up with the ship and stay ahead of the princess that’s after them. Their journey towards the grand stream is filled with twists and turns and along the way they meet many shikigami and Kurara slowly starts to gain some of the memory’s lost back. But is it for the best that she remembers her past?  While I think that the premise of the book is really interesting and that the blend of fantasy and asian culture is really well worked, for me the pacing really let the story down. For the first two hundred pages I felt that barely anything happened with the plot. Maybe this is because I personally like books that are full of action and that have the characters always ...

Book Recommendations - Get Kids Reading

Image
As a kid I always struggled when it came down to reading, that was probably also due to the undiagnosed dyslexia as well. The books at school weren't fun to me and I had a really hard time engaging with the material we were tasked to read. That was until I found the kinds of books that I actually loved to read - shockingly at the time for me it was Twilight - and since then it's been a struggle for me to put a book down.  The amount of times I would get told off at school for reading during the lessons were too many to count. To try and help you find the right book for your kids to get them into reading I've come up with 3 books that I think might just do the trick. 1. Alex Rider - Anthony Horowitz. Rating - 4/5 stars  This story fol lows Alex Rider, a school boy who in the aftermath of his uncles death finds out that not everything was as it seems. Thrust into the world of Spies and espionage, Alex quickly realises that all the fun activities and hobbies that his uncles ha...
