Book Recommendations - Get Kids Reading
As a kid I always struggled when it came down to reading, that was probably also due to the undiagnosed dyslexia as well. The books at school weren't fun to me and I had a really hard time engaging with the material we were tasked to read. That was until I found the kinds of books that I actually loved to read - shockingly at the time for me it was Twilight - and since then it's been a struggle for me to put a book down.
The amount of times I would get told off at school for reading during the lessons were
too many to count.
To try and help you find the right book for your kids to get them into reading I've come up with 3 books that I think might just do the trick.
1. Alex Rider - Anthony Horowitz.
Rating - 4/5 stars
This story follows Alex Rider, a school boy who in the aftermath of his uncles death finds out that not everything was as it seems. Thrust into the world of Spies and espionage, Alex quickly realises that all the fun activities and hobbies that his uncles had been taking him on his entire life were so that he too would be equipped to take his place one day. After completing a crash course in basic training with the army, Alex must take another boys place and find out just what makes the new Stormbreaker computers so good that billionaire Herod Sayle is planning on just giving them away.
The book is an overall fun spy drama, a little bit like James Bond for kids, that is engaging and will keep the kids glued to it until it's finished.
And what kid doesn't love reading about cool gadgets, secret missions and spies. If after the first one they are hooked, as I know I was, there are 14 books in the entire series as well as several graphic novels to keep them occupied.
2. Skulduggery Pleasant - Derek Landy.
Rating - 5/5 Stars
Easily one of my favourite books series of all time Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy has everything a young teen needs to love a book.
Stephanie Edgley is mourning the death of her favourite uncle (there seems to be a theme here hmmm) where she meets an odd man at his funeral. Thinking nothing of the strange encounter she's shocked when days later the same man is present for the reading of her uncle Gordans will. Being left his entire estate, her and her mother set off to the house to have a look around when a storm hits. Left alone after the car breaks down Stephanie is terrified when a man try to break into the house of her late uncle demanding she give him something. Desperate to escape an unlikely hero saves her... the strange man from the funeral, only he's not really a man at all. That hero - The great skeleton detective skulduggery Pleasant. From that day forward Stephanie is propelled into a world of magic, mystery and murder where she becomes the unlikely sidekick to the detective, but can this new duo work together to save the world before it's too late.
With 16 books in the series and more to be released there are no end of exciting adventure for the kids to read about from this pair.
3. The Vanquishers - Kalynn Bayron
Rating - 4/5 stars
While It wasn't that long ago that I read this book , it was such a fun read that had me unable to put it down until it was finished.
And as soon as I go to the bookstore again then the next book will be straight onto my TBR.
