A Fate Inked In Blood - Book Review
Author: Danielle L. Jensen
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Genre: Fantasy, Mythology
Published Date: February 27, 2024
Easily one of the best books Ive read this year, the first book in the saga of the unfated series by author Danielle L. Jensen is simply fantastic.
The story follows Freya, a young woman stuck in an unwanted marriage to keep her family safe, is betrayed by her husband when her secret is revealed and given to the Jarl. Said to be the shield maiden, a women who possesses a drop of blood from the goddess Hiln and prophesied about 20 years previous, Freya is once again stuck married to a man that only wants to use her. Using the powers that she swore to keep hidden she must find a way to protect the people she cares about while doing what is asked of her by the jarl, who to make sure she does what he wants forces her into a blood oath.
Filled with Norse Mythology, romance, fantasy and betrayal Danielle has managed to craft a story that from the beginning draws the reader in and captivates them until the very end. With such well thought out world building and incredible detail you can clearly see exactly how the locations described are supposed to look and feel.
The characters are so well written you feel like you know them. Because of how well they are written, some you hate from the beginning for their actions and others you love from the minute they are introduced.
Freya is a woman who, while not perfect by any means, is trying to protect the people she loves from the terrible things happening around them, not only from the people trying to get to her but the people using them to control her into doing what they want. Throughout the entire book she is conflicted on what is the right action to take and also against the voices inside her head.
Bjorn, a child of Tyr, is charming from the start and is the only character that sees Freya for the woman she really is. He is protective to a fault and will do anything in his power to keep her safe. As the story progresses you get the feeling that there's something he's keeping back from Freya and at the end when all is revealed it completely makes sense.
With the second book in the series set to be released in May 2025 this is definitely one to be added to your TBR.
