Underrated Book Trilogies
As someone who spends way too much time with my head in a book, I’ve come to love a good trilogy. For me they are the perfect length to give the story time to develop into something that will keep you glued to the pages and it will also allow the author the time to really build fascinating worlds.
That being said, here are my three underrated trilogies and yes there will be some spoilers, so you have been warned.
The Legendborn Cycle
Arthur: Tracy Deonn
Genres: Fantasy, Retellings, King Arthur Mythology
Rating: ⅘ stars
This series follows Bree Matthews as she leaves home and goes off to college. There she witnesses something that can't be explained.
A flying demon.
In her search for answers she finds the Legendborn, a secret society on campus that hunts these monsters. Oh and their members just happen to be some of King Arthur and the knights of the round tables decendents. Once she joins she realises that the lodges merlin was the person who attempted to make her forget about the demon in the first place.Throw in her own ancestral magic and the shocking truths she learns as she goes through the trials at the lodge and this is a series that will be very hard to put down.
Something that I think the author does really well with this series is blend the myth of King Arthur with the root magic that Bree has and the history behind the two very different cultures.
I absolutely love the characters, each one is incredibly well written to the point you feel like you know who they are as people and they could be real people you would expect to be in a secret society. The world build really lends itself to help the characters as well as you can tell by reading them that some are exactly as the world around them shows.
And yes I completely get that this series is quite popular but as someone who loves a plot based on mythology or a retelling of myth then to me they are underrated as there are few King Arthur story’s. But if there are any more please let me know. I’m going to want to read them all.
With the third one of the series released next year this is definitely one that I recommend picking up as you won’t be disappointed.
Summoner
Arthur: Taran Matharu
Genres: Fantasy, High fantasy, Demons
Rating: ⅘ stars
A high fantasy series that follows an orphan named fletcher. Alone one night in the graveyard he accidentally summons a salamander demon using a book of magic. Outcast from his village high up in the mountains after picking a fight with the wrong people he is forced to make the long trek to Adept Military Academy. Here he along with his new class are taught what it means to be a Battlemage and how to use the demons they either summoned or were given to help in the war.
When I read this series I was instantly hooked. The book is aimed more towards young adults but I can safely say that it works really well for any lover of fantasy.
One thing that I think is really well done is the conflicts between the common kids at the school and the elites. You really get the sense of just how bad it is for the commoners. The magic system that the author manages to create is really well throughout and it works well within the story.
All of the characters were well written, they are fun and quirky and each one feels like someone that you would know in real life. The overall pacing of the story is just right, not too slow with unnecessary details but also not too fast where things are being missed.
I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a fun fantasy series with a great magic system and great characters.
Defy The Night
Arthur: Brigid Kemmerer
Genres: Fantasy, romance, YA
Rating: ⅘ stars
With the kingdom falling ill due to an unknown illness, Tessa and Wes sneak through the wilds gifting as many residents as they can with medicine. But when they are caught and Wes is hanged by the prince Tessa takes matters into her own hands and goes to the palace with the plan to kill the prince. When she comes face to face with the prince she is shocked at just who he really is. As the kingdom falls into chaos and with new opportunities just on the horizon, Tessa and the prince manage to stop the chaos before it's too late.
A fantastic story that is full of twists and turns. Some that you see coming but some that come out of left field. The author flips between the different characters to show the several different sides to the story.
The characters, omg they're so good. You get to see the struggle that Prince Corrick is going through trying to keep his brother safe, his people safe and his dilemma when it comes to his feelings for Tessa.
Tessa starts the series as someone who believes that she's right but through the unforeseen circumstances realises that not everything is as it seems and she only has a few pieces of the puzzle. I love that no matter what she finds out during the books she always puts the others above herself and all she wants is to try and help people.
The world is so well built that while reading you feel like you are right there with them.
It's safe to say that I will definitely be reading more from this author as these are soooo good.
